Now, they celebrate the Pacific Coastline and the Gray Whale, with a beautiful gin made of botanicals, including juniper, mint, limes, fir tree, almonds, and kombu, foraged along the migratory path of that majestic creature. It was then they saw a Gray Whale and it's calf on their own road trip, likely the same migration the Gray Whales have been making for more than 30 million years. Co-Founders Jan and Marsh Mokhtari were humbled by California's stunning beauty, and feeling lucky to be looking out at the Pacific Coastline, a coastline like no other in the world. It's a simple notion that they cooked up on a camping trip to Big Sur. Gill net fishing is a direct threat to Gray Whales and their calves while on their migration.Gray Whale Gin believes a lovingly handcrafted spirit brings people together for good times, and while we're together we can also do some good in the world. Gray Whale Gin also partnered with Oceana on a special initiative to ban drift gill nets off the coast of California. We also use organic paint and a 100% biodegradable cork for our bottles to minimize harmful waste. Gray Whale is consciously crafted using carefully selected Californian botanicals that are wild foraged or sourced from sustainable farms. While leaving Big Sur, we saw a Gray Whale with her calf, on their migratory journey up the Pacific Coastline, a 12,000-mile annual trip, the longest migration known to man. We have always loved gin, and we knew that we wanted to create a product that we could be proud of – one that embodied the beauty of California and that actively supported ocean conservation. ![]() It was on this trip that Marsh and I discussed creating a legacy product. We were humbled by this experience - by California's stunning beauty, feeling lucky to be on that rocky coast, surrounded by ancient trees and the endless blue of the Pacific Ocean. Finally, our ocean botanical, and Marsh’s personal favorite, our kombu sea kelp adds an earthy umami component that sets this gin apart from any other gin in the world. ![]() ![]() The fir trees are from just outside of the distillery in Sonoma and add a complementary flavor to our juniper berries, delicate yet definitely juniper. The organic almonds are from Caypay Hills Orchard and add a wonderful creamy mouthfeel to the gin and a long lingering finish. The organic mint is from Pescadero, near Santa Cruz, CA the mint adds to the cooling sweetness. The Californian juniper adds a refined cedar quality. The heart and soul of our multi-award-winning gin is our wild foraged juniper from Big Sur, California. The citrus is beautifully present on the nose and imparts a delicate sweetness to the gin. The Spirit of Coastal California There may be no animal species more closely associated with the California coast than the gray whale. Our hand zested limes are from an organic orchard in Temecula, CA.
